Football: Form suggests Technical will extend lead

There will be a rare double-header at the Caledonian Ground today, where Footballsouth Premier League leader Dunedin Technical will play Roslyn-Wakari and University attempts to leapfrog Northern.

Unbeaten Technical has a five-point lead at the top as the halfway mark approaches, and looks the form team, hungrily setting a hot pace in the championship race.

Technical's intimidating average of almost six goals per game tends to push the opposition on to its back foot, and no wonder, with striker Aaron Burgess already amassing a personal tally of 16 goals in seven matches.

Yet Technical is well balanced in other areas, and its experienced core is well leavened by some of the best young players around, and others queuing in the wings.

Defenders Liam Lockhart and Matt Joy could grace lineouts such is their height, Tristan Prattley is safe but also dangerous when he races forward to deliver quality crosses, and Hayden Gunn improves week to week.

Helping to offset the loss of Andy Coburn is centreback Tim Myers.

His international experience spreads calm at the back, and he rarely wastes passes forward.

In contrast, Roslyn is a young side with several players at the same stage of development. Coach Colin Thom encourages creative play and when the team clicks it can certainly make goal-scoring chances.

The Cunningham brothers, Mike and Aajay, span the range of talent available. Mike has experience of football in the United States and is a gifted passer of the ball, while young Aajay is a hard-working parcel of tricks who can damage the opposition.

Roslyn goalkeeper Peter Evans is also an important element, and when Tim Mather plays to potential his marshalling of Roslyn's defence is a key factor.

In the early game, both Northern and University have a swag of students in their ranks who all play with attacking elan.

Better at going forward than defending, both sides' collective goals-against tally of 34 is almost seven goals per game, and while that may not win championships, it promises end-to-end play.

Caversham still lurks in second place, looking to reel in Technical, and has the difficult away fixture against Spirit FC in Invercargill.

The match will be played on artificial turf, with a surface the Spirit is used to but which should favour the quality attacking skills of Caversham.

Mosgiel should have too many guns for Green Island at Memorial Park, but Mike McGarry's side fired a few blanks last time out in its marginal 1-0 win over the Spirit, and will surely be sharper.

Grants Braes travels to play Queenstown buoyed by its recent Chatham Cup victory, but Steve Henderson's Central Otago side has had only one win and will be desperate for a home result.
