It is a long way from the plains of Mosgiel to the Indian Super League, especially via the Charleston Battery club in the United States, but defender Colin Falvey is up for the challenge.

Falvey (29) played his football in Otago with Mosgiel, and appeared for Otago United in the national league.

Recruited to play for Kerala Blasters, owned by cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar and managed by former England goalkeeper David James, the Irishman is excited about the prospect.

As well as manager James, the new ISL has a collection of former stars involved such as Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Freddie Ljungberg.

''They may be at the tail end of their careers, but these boys have so much quality and they can hurt you even if they are not running around much,'' Falvey said.

Falvey's plan is to use the three-month season to stay fit, improve his profile, make connections and be ready for January when he hopes to link up with an MLS club before the start of the 2015 season.

''I just want to keep on improving and going as far as I can in the game,'' Falvey said.

As he prepares to pick up a pay cheque from playing football on a fourth different continent, Falvey admits he enjoys global roaming.

''I've been playing in New Zealand and America for the best part of a decade now and this is another experience that I think can benefit me.''

The ISL will feature franchises from Bangalore, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune, and has signed an agreement with the English Premier League to engage the 200 million-plus Indian fan base by showcasing quality football.
