Football: Drawn-out season coming to end

Caversham will take a settled and battle-hardened team into its penultimate game of a drawn-out premier league season today.

Caversham makes the trip over the Andersons Bay hill to visit Grants Braes at Ocean Grove.

The Tonga Park-based team will aim to place one hand firmly on the premier league trophy with a quality performance and three points, which would draw it level with league leader Dunedin Technical.

The teams would be tied on 49, and Caversham would have one game - also against Grants Braes - left.

Due to the vagaries of the draw, the Alan Laidler-coached Grants Braes team last played on July 31 when it beat University 1-0 to move into eighth position.

Braes welcomes back captain and central midfielder Markus Mineba to a well-rested squad that will be keen to act as a spoiler.

Meanwhile, a large group of local supporters and administrators attended a midweek meeting at the Caledonian Ground.

The speaker was New Zealand Football's John Herdman, the organisation's director of football development.

Herdman summarised key features of the "Whole of Football Plan", which will be rolled out soon.

After two years of extensive international research, supported by Sparc and community and corporate partners, the plan is scheduled to be gradually implemented throughout New Zealand.

Its goal will be to provide an effective game delivery structure utilising club and federation youth development strategies based on models around the world.

A pillar of the plan will be to encourage more unstructured informal playing and learning opportunities where young players catch a lifetime dose of football fever through less adult intervention.
