Football: Coburn to take final bow for Tech

Andy Coburn will bring down the curtain today, playing his last match for Dunedin Technical against Grants Braes at Tahuna Park.

Coburn heads away to Australia soon, and his brilliant career in Otago was probably highlighted last week with a diving header that combined all of his commendable qualities.

Bravery, athleticism, and a keen football brain combined to draw generous applause at Tonga Park, where his horizontal dive was timed to perfection as he made superb contact to score a memorable goal.

Better known for his strong midfield performances in provincial matches, national league and local club football, Coburn usually scores a couple of spectacular goals each season, and he certainly signed off in style against rival Caversham.

"No doubt we will miss Andy," Technical coach Mike Fridge said.

"He has played with distinction for club and province, and has been a role model for all the aspiring young players that are coming through the ranks locally."

Technical has a four-point lead at the top of the league and it is hard to imagine its statistics will not improve against Grants Braes today.

Braes is a vastly improved side from recent seasons, but coach Allan Laidler's squad does not have great depth, and recent injuries and suspensions have made things difficult.

Second-top Roslyn-Wakari plays Northern at Ellis Park in a fixture with some history, not lessened by the extra intensity of trying to win the Robbie Brownlie Memorial Trophy.

Seventh-placed Northern has potential but is yet to find consistency over 90 minutes. Coach Steve Brooks' side beat Braes, drew with Green Island and Spirit, narrowly lost to Mosgiel and was thumped 6-0 by Caversham.

Unbeaten Roslyn, under new coach Colin Thom, is generating power and pace through Sam Mepham and the Cunningham brothers, Aajay and Mike, plus a spread of goals that features half the team.

Licking its wounds from last week's loss, Caversham needs to get back on track against University at the Caledonian Ground. Providing his international paperwork is completed, giant French striker Sebastien Tilmant could make his debut.

University lost 2-0 to Mosgiel last week, and typically it will depend on how many regular players are available during this holiday period.

Mosgiel travels to play Queenstown, which was involved in a controversial 2-2 draw with the Spirit last week.

The Spirit is at home to Green Island, which has had spells of good play, but is yet to register a win. The Invercargill side has been re-inforced by a Scots import from Perth, Craig Ferguson, who won player of the day on his first outing last week.
