Football: Cavvy all but sews up title

Caversham moved to the top of the Footballsouth premier league on Saturday with a 2-0 win over a well-drilled Grants Braes team at Ocean Grove.

With one game remaining in the season, Caversham only has to avoid a large loss in its final game - a rematch with Grants Braes - to claim its 10th league title in the past 11 seasons.

Caversham landed its first significant blow after good work down the left flank and a quality cross from Ben Hawkey.

Caversham midfielder Hamish Chang timed his run to perfection to meet the ball before his marker and power a strong header past Grants Braes keeper Josh Columbus' outstretched hand to take a 1-0 lead to the break.

Grants Braes was committed in defence and hard to break down, but after winning possession was too often guilty of aimlessly hoofing the ball to the men up front.

The Caversham defence, anchored by Tim Horner and Tom Schwartz, mopped up most Grants Braes' efforts without distress and provided an armchair ride for Caversham keeper James Waggett's final game for his adopted club.

A phase of play occurred in the 57th minute which provided a fine example of Caversham's attacking dominance.

Darren Overton made an aggressive overlapping run down the left flank, demanding the ball which was delivered on cue.

He attacked the penalty area and defenders with confidence and composure, resisting an early cross to team-mates and closing in on the goal before laying off a short chip to Harley Rodeka, who nodded home a simple chance from 3m.

Caversham coach Steve Fleming was justifiably happy with the win.

"Our last goal was our 100th for the season in the league and cup, which over 22 matches averages out to 4.5 goals per game," Fleming said.

"I'm really happy with our style of play. Scoring goals and winning means players motivate themselves."

Grants Braes looked to create more chances in the final 20 minutes, with substitute Jarrod Wright creating some pressure down the left side and linking well with Shannon Cox and Liam Lockhart.

Some excellent runs from dynamic Braes right-back Kieran Putt might have brought tangible results if they had started in the Caversham half.

Teams from the two clubs also met in the Stefan Cockill Memorial game yesterday.

It finished in a 4-4 draw.
