Football: Business end of season for clubs

Clubs will be jostling for position this weekend as they enter the final phase of the Footballsouth Premier League.

Just four points cover sixth to 10th positions in a condensed bottom half of the league.

League leader Technical will host University at the Caledonian Ground and will be aiming for three points to keep pressure on second-placed Caversham.

Caversham may rest players today as it is just a week out from the Chatham Cup semifinal against Bay Olympic in Dunedin.

The Tonga Park-based club will not have it all its own way when it travels over the hill to Ocean Grove to play an improved mid-table Grants Braes team.

The Alan Laidler-coached Braes side has strengthened the attacking component of its team and has graduated a level or two by turning close games into wins this season.

An erratic Roslyn-Wakari team will head to Memorial Park to take on a disappointed Mosgiel side, which worked its way into a good position against Caversham until unravelling in the final quarter last week.

The Plainsmen will be without left back Michael Abbott, who is suspended.

Queenstown Rovers will visit Northern at the Gardens, aiming to move up from ninth position.

Bottom-placed Green Island will hope to topple the Spirit and be the second Dunedin-based team winning in Invercargill today.
