Football: Award to Burgess -- again

Striker Aaron Burgess won his fifth straight Footballsouth Golden Boot award last night in the association's annual prizegiving held at Forbury Park Function Centre.

The Dunedin Technical striker is one of a rare breed who can transform an ordinary team into championship material.

Burgess has the classic striker's knack of being in the right place at the right time, and the timing and angles of his attacking runs are object lessons to all aspiring finishers.

This season he hit 25 Footballsouth Premier League goals for Technical, plus another three in the Chatham Cup, which earned the club second place in the FPL.

Last year he scored 32 FPL goals as Technical won the competition eight points ahead of Caversham.

Since 2008 when he returned from overseas, he has scored 152 goals for Technical, and going back further to 1999 his grand total for the maroons is 197 goals.

That only three goals are needed for a double century suggests Burgess will again pull on his boots next season.

Notwithstanding business commitments at his Athletes Foot Franchise, and his family - wife Maggie and daughter Ruby - the striker could yet take a part in Otago United's National League campaign this year.

Harley Rodeka's accelerating form from last year earned him the Sportsperson of the Year award, but the Caversham striker has transferred to Napier.

Chelsea Whittaker won the women's Sportsperson of the Year award, and another Technical player, goalkeeper Tess Nicol, earned the Young Female Player award.

Caversham's Andrew Ridden won the men's Sportsperson award.

Coaches of the year were Richard Murray(Caversham) and Sally Hicks (Mosgiel).

Referee prizes went to Allan Martin and assistant Jeff Clamp, and Kevin Philip was named the most Promising Ref. Sports Personalities were Averley Sinclair of Green Island and Andrew Wittaker.
