There was no arguing with Rhys Quarrell on Saturday.

The prolific marksman banged in eight goals to inspire Mosgiel to a 10-0 demolition of Queenstown in the ODT Southern Premiership.

His haul included a diving header and a well-executed bicycle kick.

Luke Clissold made it 4-0 at halftime with a smart finish, and Harvey Stephens also got on the Mosgiel scoresheet when he spotted keeper Daniel Bocatios off his line and slotted home from 35m.

Northern remain in second place after a 3-0 win over Queens Park in Invercargill.

Both teams had an equal share of possession in the first half. The home side had to sub playmaker Ryo Okayama after 29 minutes and Northern took the lead four minutes later when Rory Hibbert picked up a loose ball and gave Queens Park goalkeeper Jaden Castle no chance.

The second half was just as exciting as both teams created numerous chances, but Northern made the game safe with two goals in the final eight minutes.

Al Julanda Al Mawali got behind the defence and squared the ball for Sam Cosgrove, who scored from close range, and Cosgrove completed the scoring with a tap-in.

Timaru’s Northern Hearts got their first win of the season, beating University 2-1.

Sam Powers scored in the first minute to put the under-strength students, who had nine of the match-day squad playing in Invercargill in Friday night’s Fletcher Cup fixture, under immediate pressure.

Bailey Chambers made it 2-0 right on halftime. The students reduced the deficit early in the second half through Alexander Dale but any chances of an equaliser were quashed when Joseph Araya was sent off.

Green Island and Wanaka drew 1-1 at Sunnyvale as Flynn Brown’s early goal was cancelled out by Josh Macmillan in the second half.

On Friday night, Roslyn-Wakari beat the Dunedin City Royals 3-2.

The Royals started well with Michael Neaverson finding plenty of time and space to dictate play, having a goal disallowed for offside and also spurning two one-on-one opportunities by shooting straight at keeper Tom Stevens.

Ben Williams-Davies scored two top goals, in the 29th and 42nd minute, against the run of play for Roslyn.

The Royals responded after the break when a throw-in caught Roslyn out of shape and Matthew Adye scored, and they equalised after 50 minutes with Campbell Thompson firing a quality first-time volley into the far top corner of the net.

The game opened up with both sides looking to get forward, and Roslyn claimed all three points when Callum Smith’s free kick on the edge of the box struck the inside of the left-hand post before hitting the back of the net.

—  The Dunedin City Royals went toe to toe with Southern League leaders Cashmere Technical in Christchurch on Saturday.

It was locked up at 0-0 at the break before Zander Edwards broke the deadlock for Cashmere in the 59th minute.

Substitute Gabe Galloway kept Cashmere top of the table, sealing a 2-0 win with a goal in the 67th minute.

Coastal Spirit remained in second place after coming from behind at the break to beat Selwyn 5-2, Christchurch United also conceded first against Nomads but prevailed 2-1 to stay in third spot, four points behind Cashmere Tech, and Ferrymead Bays beat Canterbury University 3-0.

—  Shontelle Smith and Rose Morton got the goals as the Dunedin City Royals opened the South Island women’s league with a 2-0 win over Coastal Spirit at Logan Park.

Both teams tried to maintain possession, which differed from the counter-attack tactics the Royals have encountered in the local league.

The Royals were more productive with the ball and created a few chances, but Coastal keeper Amy Simmers made some good saves.

Smith opened the scoring after 30 minutes. There was some good interplay down the right-hand side before Tabitha Seaton played a square ball to a unmarked Smith for a simple finish.

Coastal came out in the second half with a lift in their tempo and were a lot more productive, although the Royals defended closely.

Morton finished from close range in the 58th minute following a free kick that was not cleared, giving the Royals a two-goal lead that they held until fulltime.

The Royals’ midfield three of Smith, Seaton and Morton created the foundation for both attack and defence in this game.
