Volts’ Hazeldine, Bacon ruled out

Otago have had two changes forced on them ahead of their critical match against Wellington in Dunedin tomorrow.

Seamers Andrew Hazeldine (hamstring) and Matt Bacon (calf) have been ruled out and they have been replaced by a couple of potential debutants.

All-rounder Zac Cumming and Taieri right-armer Toby Hart come into the 12.

Hart is fresh from a strong performance for Otago A against Canterbury Country last month. He grabbed 11 wickets in the match.

He is quick enough and he hits the stickers nice and hard.

Cumming is contracted with the Volts. The national under-19 representative has also been named in the Otago A team, which suggests the wrist spinner may carry the drinks tomorrow.

Otago A will play Canterbury A in three-day game in Christchurch from November 4-6. Cumming has been included for days two and three.

The Volts find themselves in a tight spot four games into the 10-game round-robin.

They had a promising win against Northern Districts first up, but have lost their last three games.

The 240-run loss to Canterbury was the largest runs defeat in the history of the competition.

They were competitive against Auckland and got unlucky against Central Districts in Dunedin on Wednesday.

Hazeldine and Bacon, who is the competition’s leading wicket-taker with 10 scalps, pulled up lame and were unable to complete their 10 over allotments.

The Volts ended up conceding 330 runs, which proved too many to chase.

Their batting lineup has fired and flopped in equal measure.

Dean Foxcroft’s lean run has stretched out further. The talented right-hander has scored just 36 runs at an average of nine in four games so far.

Llew Johnson has been promoted to No3 this season and he is due. The powerful right-hander has been getting starts then getting out.

Opener Dale Phillips has been the best of the Otago batters. He has clocked two half centuries already and the skipper, Luke Georgeson, has made a decent impact in his new role at No6.

Last summer Georgeson produced a coupe of dazzling performance against Wellington — his old team.

He took five for 11 in Queenstown to help the Volts win by eight wickets. And earlier that month he took five for 37 to help seal a 15-run win.
