Kneebone’s brio with bat aids in tense win

Green Island 197 beat Albion 186

Green Island has moved up the Dunedin premier declaration competition standings with a tense win against Albion at Sunnyvale on Saturday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Kneebone whacked 71 from 80 deliveries to help the Swamp Rats post a tally of 197.

He combined with Dan Wright (47) in a valuable stand of 74 for the fourth wicket.

It was the only partnership of any real substance.

Green Island would have fallen short of a competitive total had Jed Mockford not also compiled a patient half-century.

Tommy Clout was the pick of the Albion bowlers with three for 23 from 7.3 overs, while Angus McKenzie and Sam Wells took two apiece.

Wells tried his best to stitch the run-chase together. He came to the crease with his side 48 for four and added 42.

Josh Cuttance (28) and Clout (27) made solid contributions down the order.

But Tony Cardno returned to the bowling crease and picked up both their wickets to wrap up Albion’s innings for 186 and seal an 11-run win.

Cardno finished with three for 21. Keegan Russell and Jack Mockford also nabbed three wickets.

The win has lifted Green Island to second place.

Albion remains at the top.
