Depleted Sparks relying on newbies

The Otago Sparks will debut a new generation of players in Oamaru this weekend.

The side has been stripped of five players for its back-to-back one-dayers against Wellington.

Suzie Bates, Katey Martin and Hayley Jensen are on White Ferns duty, Molly Loe is still struggling with a back complaint and Caitlin Blakely is unavailable.

That has opened up opportunities for some newcomers.

Harriett Cuttance, Chloe Deerness and Paige Loggenberg are poised to make their list A debuts.

The trio have performed well for Otago at age-group level, including during the recent women’s under-19 national tournament in Lincoln.

Deerness impressed with her right-arm off spin and finished the tournament as the equal top wicket taker (13 wickets at an average of 12.38).

Hard-hitting all-rounder Loggenberg also showed her skill, finishing as the fourth leading scorer with 214 runs at 71.33.

Cuttance is a talented swing bowler and juggles her cricket commitments with netball, where she has been a member of the Southern Steel Academy side.

Otago coach Craig Cumming is looking forward to seeing what the trio is capable of.

"What excites me about Paige is she actually has genuine batting skills," he said.

"She has a really good technique. She can hit well on the off-side ... and she bowls with good pace, actually."

Deerness has two quality spinners ahead of her in Eden Carson and Sophie Oldershaw. But Cumming is keen to play all 12 players during the next two days, while Cuttance is a "genuine swing bowler" who should enjoy the conditions.

"She has been training with us all year, so I’m excited for her to get some reward for all that hard work and get some game time.

"We’ll look to use her with the new ball and that gives her the greatest chance of being successful."

Deerness is a similar player to Carson.

"She has lovely changes of pace and flights the ball really well. Immense talent and very good in the field. Technically, she is very good with the bat, so she will become a very good all-rounder for the Sparks in the future."

Kate Ebrahim will captain the side in the absence of Bates. She has been in tremendous form with the bat and will need to find that touch again this weekend to help nurture an inexperienced side through the games.

She may also have a point to prove after missing selection in the World Cup squad.

Wellington is down on firepower as well. The Blaze are missing White Ferns Sophie Devine, Maddy Green and Amelia and Jess Kerr.

Both games will be open to the public but limited to 100 people.

All spectators must sign in at the ground using the Covid tracer app and show proof of vaccination.
