Emergency services were called to the intersection of Cargill and Stuart Sts in response to a collision between an e-scooter and a van with a trailer about 1pm yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said a 36-year-old man was travelling towards the Octagon on the scooter, when a 70-year-old man driving the van collided with him.
The 36-year-old was transported to the emergency department and placed in the intensive care unit.
Cargill St resident Olivia Kellow said she ran downstairs when she heard the crash from her flat.

The e-scooter rider was wearing a helmet, but appeared to be bleeding and have injured limbs.
She said as soon as the man became aware of what had happened to him he wanted to get up and move.
The serious crash unit had been notified and road diversions had also been put in place.
A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said it responded with one ambulance, one rapid-response unit and an operations manager.
