Otago needed less than an hour to score the required 43 runs to beat Auckland and register its first win this summer.
Resuming on 154 for four in pursuit of 197 for victory on the fourth and final day, overnight batsmen Neil Broom and Derek de Boorder completed the task at hand by knocking off the remaining 43 runs in just 10.4 overs.
Broom advanced his overnight total from 28 to 50 - his 16th first-class half century - and de Boorder was undefeated on 31.
But the six-wicket win was set up by some fantastic bowling by left-armer Neil Wagner.
The South African-born strike bowler took 10 wickets in the match, lifting his season tally to 16.
Otago will play Wellington in the capital next week before the Plunket Shield goes into hiatus while the twenty/20 and one-day tournaments take
place.
