Otago all-rounder Nathan McCullum demonstrated his class with 91 and three for 24 to help Albion thrash Taieri by 101 runs and secure the Mumbles McQueen trophy on Saturday.
Albion 240 beat Taieri 139 at the Oval
McCullum came to the wicket with Albion in early strife at 10 for two and set about rebuilding the innings.
McCullum and Chris Cook-Martin (23) added 60 and then he teamed up with Nathan King to add 78 for the fourth wicket.
But nine runs short of a well-deserved 100, McCullum offered Marcel McKenzie a catch off the bowling of Hayden Anderson.
Albion threatened to throw away most of the good work, losing the next five wickets for 37 runs.
But Craig Souter and Jeremy Medlin dug in and scored 55 in a valuable last wicket stand to get Albion through to 240.
Hayden Anderson took four for 31 from eight overs for Taieri and Brad Frost picked up two for 34 from 10.
Taieri's run chase unravelled immediately with both openers departing early.
McCullum removed Anderson and then dismantled the middle order, picking up Jarrod Waldron and Tim Clydesdale.
At 73 for six, Ben Kidston threw caution to the wind and smashed a quick-fire 29 but it was never going to be enough to rescue his side.
Promising left-arm spinner Nic Beard had Kidston caught behind and took four for 46 from a 10 over spell.
Kaikorai 82 lost to University-Grange 83 for four at Logan Park
Kaikorai's batting line-up had no answers for a classy University-Grange attack and was bowled out for a paltry 82.
Anthony Bullick took three for 19 from eight overs but Otago left-arm seamer Craig Smith was the pick of the bowlers.
Smith took two for six from seven overs, including four maidens.
Smith was one of the most improved Otago players last season and he is pushing hard for a starting role when Otago's four-day campaign gets under way at the University Oval on November 17.
Offspinner Will Somerville also reminded the Otago selectors of his ability, taking three for nine from six overs.
Somerville has struggled to get game time for Otago with Nathan McCullum keeping him out of the squad.
University made short work of the chase, overhauling the meagre total in the 14th over with six wickets to spare.
Mark Collie top-scored with 29 not out.
Will Deerness picked up two wickets for 27 runs from six overs in an otherwise forgettable day for Kaikorai.
Pelichet Bay 243 lost to Carisbrook-Dunedin 245 for four at Logan Park
Otago left-hander Greg Todd scored a century to guide Carisbrook-Dunedin to a six-wicket win over Pelichet Bay.
Chasing a target of 244, Todd paced his innings well, getting through to 100 before he was bowled by swing bowler Neil Wagner.
His 100 came off 113 balls and he hit 14 boundaries to all parts of the ground.
He had good support from player-coach Tony McEntyre, who remained undefeated on 82.
McEntyre clipped a lot of his runs into the leg side and combined with Todd to score 146 for the second wicket.
Wagner was the pick of the Pelichet Bay bowlers with two for 32 from 10 overs.
Earlier, he helped his side reach 243 with a hard-hit 47.
Wicketkeeper batsman Shaun Fitzgibbon scored 48 and former Black Caps fast bowler Ian Butler whacked four fours and four sixes on his way to 54.
Legspinners Rhys Phillips and Andrew Bevins grabbed two wickets apiece and Dan Williamson took four for 54 from 9.5 overs.
Green Island 190 for seven beat North East Valley 129 at the Oval
Green Island opener Hamish Rutherford continues to impress, scoring 55 to help his side beat North East Valley by 61 runs.
Rutherford has already been rewarded for his early season form with a place in the Otago squad to play two warm-up matches against Canterbury in Lincoln this week, and did not fail to deliver with another good innings on Saturday.
With fellow opener Craig Cumming missing out, Rutherford played a restrained innings, scoring his 50 off 67 balls.
It was a patient and mature knock and helped Green Island settle.
Dion Lobb (26) and Mark Joyce (29) cashed in with valuable runs in the middle order to get Green Island through to 190 for seven.
Mat Harvie, who was sidelined last year with a back injury, bowled well for North East Valley, taking two for 18 from 10 overs including three maidens.
Gary Paine also played well, taking three for 34 from 10 overs.
North East Valley's reply began well with both openers Russell Thomas (15) and Nick Fitzgerald (13) getting starts.
But Lobb struck, removing Thomas and Otago pair Neil Broom (21) and Derek de Boorder (3).
Lobb finished with three for 16 and Craig Cumming mopped up the tail with three for 15 from 7.1 overs, as North East Valley was bowled out for 129.
