Cricket: Brooms, de Boorder guide NEV to victory

Carisbrook-Dunedin 229/8 lost to NEV 230/3 by seven wickets.

Otago trio Derek de Boorder (76), Darren Broom (63) and Neil Broom (50 not out) guided North East Valley to a seven-wicket win against Carisbrook-Dunedin at Ocean Grove on Saturday.

Brad Rodden (54) and Tony McIntyre (49) top-scored for Carisbrook, helping their side through to 229 for eight from 50 overs.

Florian Schmidt was the chief destroyer with the ball, taking four for 52 from 10 overs, and Darren Broom bowled a tidy eight-over spell, picking up one wicket for 19 runs.

North East Valley's chase suffered an early setback but a 111-run second-wicket partnership between de Boorder and Darren Broom set up the win.

Neil Broom chipped in with an undefeated 50 to help complete the victory.

Tim McCormick was the pick of the Carisbrook-Dunedin attack, with two for 23 from 8.1 overs.

Albion 241/9 lost to University-Grange 244/0 by 10 wickets
Otago openers Aaron Redmond and Michael Bracewell combined in an undefeated 244-run opening stand to lead University-Grange to a 10-wicket win against Albion at Culling Park.

Redmond smacked 125 off 93 deliveries and Bracewell scored 102 from 92 balls.

Remarkably, University-Grange reached its target with 19.1 overs remaining.

There was not much joy for Albion's attack but Josh Cuttance and Ollie Newton may have taken some joy from the one maiden they bowled apiece.

Earlier, things had started quite well for Albion with Jamie Glenn (48) and Shaun Haig (56) getting the team off to a solid start.

Nick Beard chipped in with 41.

Jason Hynes picked up three wickets and Bracewell took two for 42.

Green Island 303/7 beat Taieri 177 by 126 runs
Former Otago captain Craig Cumming and aggressive left-hander opener Hamish Rutherford put on 204 for the first-wicket to set up a 126-run win against Taieri at Sunnyvale.

Cumming found some rich form stroking a superb 116 from 89 deliveries, while his opening partner was also in fine touch, scoring 90 from 97.

Callum Thompson secured the double breakthrough, bowling Rutherford first and then defeating Cumming.

Dion Lobb whacked an undefeated 27 from 23 to help his side reach 303 for seven.

Ash Simpson (49) and Anthony Harris (39) got the chase off to a useful beginning but Taieri faded under the pressure.

Rutherford completed a memorable day, picking up four for 21 from 10 overs and Mark Joyce took two for 23.

Kaikorai beat Otago Country by default
Otago Country was forced to default after it was unable to host Kaikorai in Alexandra on Saturday or get a team together to travel to Dunedin for the fixture.

The pitch at Molyneux Park was too damp to host the game and the alternative venue at Dunstan High School was unsuitable.

Under the agreement with Dunedin Cricket Association, Otago Country agreed it would travel to Dunedin to play if was unable to host a game.

"The call was made about 5.30pm on Friday and it was just too late to get guys to change their work commitments so they could leave early enough," Otago Country Cricket Association chairman Malcolm Jones said.

Jones hopes the decision to default will not jeopardise Otago Country's future in the competition.
