Sarah Scott returned to her best form to help Dunedin win the intercentre 8s for the first time in Christchurch at the weekend.

In the final against Nicole Toomey (Wellington), Scott won the singles 21-14 and the pair of Carolyn West and Sharon McCaw won 15-10.

The Dunedin four of Sarah Ibbotson, Jan Hall, Helen Carman and Shona Morrison lost to Wellington 17-12.

The annual event for bowlers with less than eight years' playing experience was held for the first time in 2006.

Scott and the Dunedin pair won six of their seven games while the four won two games, drew two and lost three.

The team's temperament was tested in the quarterfinal against Hawkes Bay when it came back from the brink to advance to the next round.

Scott trailed Alison Lott 12-20 but came back to win the game 21-20.

On the final end, two of her bowls nestled beside the jack.

The pair was level with Hawkes Bay 16-16 before the final end.

``We were two down on the head when Carolyn drove the jack into the ditch to win the game,'' manager Lyn Rance said.

In the semifinal against Canterbury, Scott beat Cait Bassett 21-16 and the pair won 17-13.

It has been a superb season by Scott, who has won three Bowls Dunedin titles and now has her gold star for five wins.

The team showed the benefit of the revamped women's interclub competition that gives bowlers hard competition each week.

Advice from Bowls Dunedin coach Evan Roberts helped at crucial times.

The Dunedin men's team lost 3-0 to North Harbour in the semifinals.

Ray Webster lost 21-7 in the singles and the pair of Jonty Horwell and Brent McEwan and the four of Alan Auguston, Wally Shaw, Keri Rupene and Paul King lost their games narrowly 15-13.

All three disciplines won four of their six games at the weekend.

North Harbour beat Waikato 3-0 in the final.

The Central Otago men's and women's teams both failed to qualify for the quarterfinals.
