Clements (59), the owner of a Steptoe junk shop in Alexandra, is only the second bowler to win 50 centre titles.
Former international David File was the first, reaching the half-ton in the Gisborne-East Coast Centre.
The small Gisborne-East Coast Centre only has eight clubs and there are 18 in Central Otago.
File won most of his titles with a small group of friends to build up an efficient combination, while Clements showed his mettle by winning titles with a wider circle of bowlers.
"It just happened. I didn't plan it," Clements told the Otago Daily Times.
"Other players want to beat me and take my scalp. That keeps me going."
Reaching 100 titles is not on his mind.
"I didn't think I'd reach 50 until I got to 40," Clements said.
"I then thought it was on. But I didn't do anything different."
Clements did not have an easy run in the strong Central Otago centre. He had to beat players of the calibre of internationals Kevin and Bill Scott, New Zealand champion Shaun Scott and talented local players like Tom Rutherford, Bruce McKinnell and Bill Kitto.
Clements started playing bowls in 1981 and won his first centre title a year later, in the open singles. But the title he treasures most came in 1983, when he beat South Island representative Tom Rutherford in the same event.
"Tom beat me in the champion of champion singles and I beat him by one point the next year," he said.
All of Clements' titles have been in singles or as a skip in team events. This has kept him focused and on his mettle. His best year was in 2003, when he won a record seven Central Otago titles.
Clements was still playing cricket for Clyde when he was invited to have a roll at the local bowling club in Alexandra. He gave cricket away after the 1986-87 season.
"I went along and enjoyed it," he said. "I was an old rookie when I started and learnt by playing."
He was given good advice by old Central Otago stalwarts Harry Tremlow and Bill Cooney.
The biggest influence on his bowls is partner Linley O'Callaghan (52), who has won 15 Central Otago titles. "Linley organises me and pushes me along," Clements admitted.
They are a competitive combination in the mixed pairs and finished third in the New Zealand finals at Rotorua last season. Clements has not yet won a New Zealand title but he has come close and has finished third and fourth in the Pathways singles.
