Port Chalmers bowling club has helped raise the $2000 bowler Allan Warren needed to join the New Zealand team at the sixth International Deaf Bowls championships in Perth next year.
The 67-year-old pensioner was excited about being named in the New Zealand team but was unable to raise the cash to fund the trip.
So the Port Chalmers bowling club backed its bowler and set up a fundraising campaign.
Yesterday, the club's green keeper, Bruce Malcolm, phoned the Otago Daily Times with the good news.
"We've raised the money," he said.
In fact, the club had done a little better than expected, raising $2229, plus someone had slipped $A18 ($NZ22.80) into the donation box, Malcolm said.
Warren, who was diagnosed with hearing problems at the age of 8, is the only bowler from the region named in a 12-strong team.
He will be playing in his third international event.
He won a silver medal at the 2003 championships in Christchurch and also competed in Wales in 2007.
