A hefty trophy that rivals the Bledisloe Cup in size sits proudly in a Dunedin pub after a team of Otago bowlers won the Bacardi Cup in Queenstown on Wednesday.

The trophy has been contested over the past 48 years by publicans from across the country who have owned a pub for more than seven years or been involved in the industry for that time.

Robbie's Bar and Bistro captain Warren Jones has been trying to win the cup for the past 10 years.

"It took my whole life to win it and I am absolutely rapt for myself and our players."

The team that represented the St Clair bowling club and Robbie's was Brian Egerton, Colin Ward, Trevor Mason and Jones.

The tournament featured 24 teams from across the country in two days of round-robin play, with the top eight teams then competing in a knockout format for the cup.

The Dunedin team beat Speight's Ale House (Queenstown) 15-14 in the final after drawing the winning shot on the last of 15 ends.

It was a tense final end, with the Robbie's team holding three shots before Queenstown unleashed a final drive that saw the jack settle beside Egerton's bowl.

"We were elated and there was a lot of cheering and congratulatory handshakes," Jones said.

Ward, who bowled second for his team, said he was on "cloud nine" and he was especially pleased for Jones, who had been trying to win the cup for as long as he could remember.

Jones and Ward said the massive cup was insured for about $40,000.

The tournament was a big success for St Clair bowlers, with a group of players also winning the plate section.

Next year, the tournament will be held in Nelson and Jones said his side would be back to defend its title.
