Basketball: Old rivals back for more

Old enemies the St Kilda Saints and the Magic will once again compete for the honours in the final of the Dunedin club basketball competition at the Edgar Centre today.

The same teams did battle last year with the Magic emerging victorious 82-80 in a typically tight encounter.

Twelve months on and the Saints are hoping to erase the memory of that heartbreaking loss.

They have been the form team all season and will go into the fixture as the warm favourites - the same as 2009.

The Saints have a very useful roster which includes promising Otago Nuggets guard James Ross and up-and-coming Nuggets forward Tom Rowe.

The Gillan brothers, Matt and Tim, are experienced players and are expected to shine.

Matt Gillan top-scored for the Saints in last year's final with 21 points.

The Magic will have to make do without Nuggets captain Sam To'omata.

He bagged 21 points in last year's final to help his side steal the title.

Without the tenacious point guard the Magic lacks some firepower.

The Magic is undersized and will look to guards Jordan Small and Hayden Miller to get the ball up and down with Nuggets forward Matt Trueman and Tom Allan battling on the insides.

The Saints beat Magic 75-64 in a play-off match last week.

The Magic bounced back to beat the City Bombers 57-48 in a sudden-death play-off to reach today's final, which tips off at 3.30pm.

The St Kilda Bullets will be hoping to make it a double for the club.

They play the Varsity Comets in the B grade final at 12.30pm.

The C grade final will see the Andy Bay Falcons play Otago Boys' High School Blue at 2pm.

In the women's competition, Ajax will play Ajax Black at 2pm with the Coasters playing Andy Bay Falcons in the B grade final at 12.30pm
