After moving from Wellington to Invercargill Sean and Kelly Tunnicliffe were delighted to take their son Leo, 2, on an adventure to the Vernon St section in Invercargill that has been turned into a forest with hundreds of sunflowers.

Rather than leave their section empty, Vicky and Dan Pearce decided to plant it out with about 650 sunflowers so they could be enjoyed by the community.

"How could you not be happy when you’re in a field full of sunflowers?"

The brightly coloured crops were attracting multitudes of bees.

"Some mornings you come down and a few bees got too drunk the night before and they haven’t been able to go home and they’re just covered in pollen like rolling around in bed — pollen drunk.

"They stay the night here, snuggled up somewhere."

The birds were happy about it, too, as they fed on the huge seed heads.

Mrs Pearce said this year’s crop was the best of the three years so far and they both got a real kick out of watching children explore the sunflower forest.

The couple were accepting donations at the gate that would go to Heart Kids.
