United States athletes dominated the 42km Merino Muster cross-country race at the Snow Farm on Saturday.

The men’s event was won by Noah Hoffman (27) in a time of 1hr 45min 8sec, 23sec ahead of team-mate Simi Hamilton (29). Both are from Aspen, Colorado.

The coach of the United States team, Matt Whitcomb, said Hoffman was one of the top 30 distance skiers in the world.

He was working to improve his sprinting, while Hamilton was a sprint racer, over courses of less 2km, who was trying to switch to distance racing.

The women’s event was won by Jessie Diggins (25), of Minnesota, in 1hr 59min 12sec, just 12sec ahead of team-mate Liz Stephen (29), of Vermont.

The field of 50 included athletes from a dozen European countries, as well as Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Whitcomb said the team had trained at the Snow Farm for more than 16 years.

"It’s home away from home for us.‘‘It’s a perfect opportunity to do some summer skiing."

The United States cross-country team has 16 athletes.

Ten are training at the Snow Farm for 18 days and the other six are training on a glacier in Alaska.

Mr Whitcomb said the Merino Muster was an important part of the team’s preparation for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships at Lahti, Finland, in February.

The 21km Snow Rake event was won by Yong-jin Cho, of Korea. Jun-ho Hwang, of Korea, was second.
