Rob Hall began his journey when he was only 9, first breeding hens and eventually working his way up primarily to cattle, sheep and horses.
Living in Waikaka, he has been making his way to A&P shows across the South Island for years, even going on to judge in a Scotland show in September last year.
Although he does not visit each South Island show every year, Wānaka has been a staple for about 25 years.
"Going to the show is like going on holiday" he said, describing the experience as being fun above all else.
As well as being enjoyable, Mr Hall felt it was an opportunity for breeders to select and show the best they have, therefore bringing in more business.
"I treat it like your shop window for the stuff you’ve got ... It makes me go out in my paddock and select the best," he said
Mr Hall has been bringing a variety of breeds over the years including Clydesdale horses, Southdown sheep, Angus cattle and many more.
After more than 20 years of visiting the show in Wānaka, he had also noticed the show becoming more prestigious, breeders putting even more care and attention into what they chose to showcase.
"It’s increased so much in quality that people are picking their best to show"
Mr Hall has been making his way up with the help of his wife and a team of handlers whom he also mentors along the way.
Some of his handlers had gone on to exhibit on their own, which was the goal for Mr Hall.
"You’re trying to encourage the next generation" he said, highlighting the importance of passing down the knowledge he has gathered over the years.
