The official opening of the Wanaka Recreation Centre today might well remind some people attending of their school ball.
The main event will be alcohol-free, in line with Wanaka Community Board recommendations.
But, some participants have been invited by building contractor Cook Brothers Construction to an after party at a local bar "immediately after the formal event''.
And the Otago Daily Times has also been told Queenstown Lakes district councillors have their own plans for a celebratory drink after the dry opening.
Although the facility opens today, the indoor sports hall will not be usable until July 15.
The indoor court space can be configured to accommodate two basketball courts, two netball courts, two tennis courts, three volleyball courts and four badminton courts. It also includes tiered seating for up to 250 people.
The centre has changing rooms, toilets and showers plus a meeting room and kitchenette available for hire.
The whole complex can also be booked out for up to 600 people, or 1640 people if extra ablution facilities are acquired. Local sports teams have already begun booking the centre for ongoing use, and it is hosting an open day on July 16 and 17.
A three-quarter-sized artificial turf for hockey, netball and tennis is expected to be complete this spring, and the attached pool facility should be finished in September 2017.
