A dangerous intersection near Luggate is being considered for  a new style of electronic warning sign.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is considering installing "activated warning signs" at 10 state highway intersections around the country.

Included is the intersection of State Highway 6 and Shortcut Rd (SH8A), between Luggate and Wanaka Airport.

Shortcut Rd is on the main route for traffic travelling between Wanaka and Christchurch.

Three tourists from Hong Kong died at the intersection in October 2015, when their rental van and a truck and trailer unit collided.

The van was turning from Shortcut Rd on to SH6 when the collision occurred.

The intersection has since been upgraded and now has four give way signs, to warn drivers approaching on  Shortcut Rd.

But the transport agency is considering adding a new sign on SH6 that would slow traffic to 60kmh or 70kmh whenever a car was approaching the highway from Shortcut Rd.

The public has until tomorrow to send feedback to  the agency  about its sign proposal.

Just get rid of the give way signs and have stop signs and rumble strips. The people leaving 8A often just drive straight on to 6 without looking.
