Woman’s fifth drink-drive charge

An Invercargill woman was almost four times over the legal alcohol limit, when she was caught drink-driving for the fifth time.

Ria Theresa Henry (45) appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Tuesday, where she pleaded guilty to two charges of driving with excess breath-alcohol level and being an unlicensed driver who failed to comply with prohibition.

Henry had been banned from driving since October 2012, after she was stopped by police in Elles Rd, in Invercargill and found not to have a licence.

She was subsequently forbidden to drive any vehicle until she obtained an appropriate driver’s licence.

However, on July 1, she was stopped by police at a checkpoint while driving her partner’s car in King Edward St, Dunedin.

The summary of facts stated her partner was in the passenger seat at the time.

A "passive" breath test was carried out and a result of 966mcg of alcohol per litre of breath was recorded.

The New Zealand legal limit for adults is 250mcg.

Henry declined a blood test and did not offer any explanation to police as to why she was driving.

She had four previous alcohol convictions on her record, the most recent in December 2018.

Judge John Brandts-Giesen convicted the woman and remanded her on bail for sentencing in January.
