The man, who asked not to be named for safety reasons, said he was in his bed on Saturday night when he noticed red flames from his window.
When he went outside, he saw a well-involved fire in a house which was unoccupied.
The house was damaged to such an extent that it had to be demolished the next day, he said.
Then, on Tuesday, about 7.45pm, he was surprised by more fire appliances on his block.
However, the fire this time was on a smaller scale than the previous one.
The residents of the house were present at the time, but no-one was injured, he said.
"It is a concern. Everyone here knows each other and we are a bit worried as no-one knows what is going on," the man said.
Since the second fire, he had checked his smoke alarms and brought the fire extinguisher from his car into his home in case of an emergency.
"I’m sleeping with one eye open. It is really weird, the whole situation," he said.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said fire investigators had attended the scene of both fires and were
now assisting police with an ongoing investigation.
A police spokeswoman said no further details could be released at this stage.
Police officers were seen yesterday taking evidence from the property where the second fire happened.
The neighbour hoped there would not be any further fires in the area.
"I just hope we don’t need to see any fire trucks tonight."
