The father of the teenage victim of an alleged hit-and-run in Invercargill says his son is making progress.

Ryan Phillips (19) sustained severe injuries after being struck by a car in Marama Ave South, Otatara, while walking home from a work party on September 25.

Yesterday, Detective Sergeant Scott Mackenzie said a 22-year-old man was charged with careless driving causing injury and failing to stop and ascertain injury, after police completed their investigation into the accident.

He will appear in the Invercargill District Court on November 17.

Speaking to the Otago Daily Times yesterday, Ryan’s father Nathan Phillips said he was happy progress had been made.

"It is a bit of a relief because it was something we were worried about.

"I’m happy [the police] are making progress and the next step is going to take place and justice will deal with it accordingly."

Mr Phillips said his son was recovering well — he was breathing without the help of machines and walking unaided.

Ryan had been doing exercises with his physiotherapist and no longer needed a nasogastric tube or IV lines.

"Yesterday I arrived at the hospital and he stood up and walked towards me.

"It is amazing what he is doing."

Mr Phillips said he would tell his son about the 22-year-man being charged when he next visited him in the hospital.

"I think [Nathan] will be quite relieved too but really sad at the same time. It is an unfortunate situation."

The father said he would still like to meet the driver.

"In the end it was an accident and we hope that we all learn from it."
