Not guilty plea over shot-man-in-back charges

An Invercargill man has pleaded not guilty to shooting another man in the back four times.

The 26-year-old man, who was granted interim name suppression, appeared via audiovisual link in the Invercargill District Court yesterday on charges related to an incident in August.

Through his lawyer, Scott Williamson, the man entered a not guilty plea for the charges related to the shooting incident.

The charges included wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and resisting police.

A 19-year-old Invercargill man was shot four times in the back about 4.40pm on October 2 at a Tweed St property. The man required surgery but survived.

The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to three charges of theft, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of methamphetamine in relation to another incident on August 17.

The summary of facts said on the day the man pulled into a self-service car wash at Ettrick St and used a grinder to cut into the machines with money inside.

He stole about $195 in $1 and $2 coins, the summary stated.

He later returned to address and tried to cut open another machine, but triggered the alarm system and fled.

Police conducted a search warrant at his address, where they found the cash, ammunition and some methamphetamine.

When questioned by police he refused to comment but said it was ‘‘tough times and he needed money for the fuel’’.

Judge Kevin Phillips convicted him and the three charges and remanded him in custody until his next appearance on January 24 for a case review hearing in relation to the shooting charges.

Three other people, Rikki May Garthwaite-Smith (26), Zane Ray Collins (21) and Whetu Taylor (36) were also charged in relation the shooting.

Garthwaite-Smith was granted bail last week, while Taylor and Collins were remanded in custody until their next appearance on November 23 when a plea was expected.
