The Invercargill City Council by-election is warming up with more candidates putting their names forward.

Business owner David Hicks and former council candidate Carl Heenan had their nominations processed by the council yesterday.

Last week, former councillor Graham Lewis told the Otago Daily Times of his candidature but just yesterday he filed the required documentation.

Mr Hicks said his nomination started as a joke when customers came to his business Rad Dad and told him he should stand.

"I guess like all of the silly ideas just wouldn’t go away.

"It just though — ‘actually, I should.’

"I’ve got free time, I’ve got the flexibility and I’ve got the experience of having worked in councils before and I probably do have something to offer for the community, a slightly different point of view."

While Mr Heenan had previously stood for mayoral and council positions, he said this by-election could be an opportunity.

"This wasn’t expected to happen, this by-election, but as it’s happened I decided I’d have a go at this one again.

"I think the council could do with some new blood, new ideas."

Nominations close on June 8.

Election day is scheduled for August 4.
