During Tuesday’s finance and projects committee meeting, Invercargill city councillors voted to prioritise a developer-led concept design for Esk St West, including Wachner Pl.
The decision was made because of the development of the Menzies Building by Distinction Hotels, to avoid construction continuing at Wachner Pl during the hotel’s expected opening in October 2024.
Strategic asset planning manager Russell Pearson presented the report "City Streets Stage 2", which outlined the next options for councillors following the recent upgrades on Esk and Don Sts.
Although originally included as part of the City Streets Stage 3 plan, the new design for Esk St West has been advanced.
Cr Allan Arnold asked Mr Pearson if there was potential for hotel developer Geoff Thomson to financially contribute to the development of Wachner Pl, as had been offered in the past.
Mr Pearson said there had been huge interest from Mr Thomson in this area.
While he was unsure if complete redevelopment of Wachner Pl could be delivered before the opening of the Distinction Hotel, he was confident consultations would be made.
"I think there is potential of being in a good place by then."
