Beating the heat

Arlo McElwain (11 months) enjoys the hottest day in Invercargill so far this summer by cooling off at the paddling pool at Queens Park yesterday.

He was one of about a dozen children making the most of the pool.

"We always complain but today was too hot. We had to come to refresh," his mother Sarah McElwain said.

A MetService spokesman said the temperatures in the city reached 31.2degC — more than 12degC above the normal average.
