Summer trampers keen to tackle the Routeburn Track in its entirety will have to wait, as a section is still closed due to the high avalanche risk.
Department of Conservation Te Anau spokeswoman Beth Masser said avalanche control was being carried out between Lake McKenzie and Lake Harris.
"All Great Walks tracks in Fiordland National Park - Milford, Kepler and Routeburn - are open and operating with the exception of the alpine section of the Routeburn.
"Spring snow conditions between Lake McKenzie and Lake Harris outlet [above Falls Hut] mean that this section of the track remains closed due to high avalanche risk."
People booked to walk the track could book a $75 helicopter flight over this section.
"Spring can always be a bit tricky as the last of the snow meets the first of the summer trampers, but generally most areas are all go and we really welcome people getting out there and making the most of their national parks."
Trampers were notified of the closed section and the helicopter option when they set out. Doc was trying to get the track fully open as soon as "reasonably possible".
