Firefighters have been called to Fonterra's Edendale plant in Southland after an acid spill this morning.
Crews from Edendale and Wyndham were called to the North Rd site about 9.05am after reports of a nitric acid spill, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.
A hazmat crew from Invercargill was also requested.
The spill, of about 60l, was well contained and caused no injuries.
A leak resulted in the acid spilling outside the plant, she said.
A Fonterra spokesman said plant staff had contained and handled the spill and firefighters were called as a precaution.
The spill was outside the plant on a concrete pad and was ''not going to be an impact on people and nowhere near product'', he said.
No-one needed to be evacuated.
