Mrs Falconer said in a statement yesterday that after almost six years at Environment Southland, and three as chief executive, the time felt right to pass the mantle on to new leadership.
"Leading Environment Southland has been a privilege and immensely rewarding for me, both for the challenge and the stimulus the role provides; not least of which is the time I have spent working alongside many exceptional, talented people dedicated to promoting a thriving Murihiku Southland within a sustainable environment," she said.
She was appointed chief executive in June, 2022.
Prior to her the appointment, she held senior management roles within the organisation from 2019, including general manager strategy, planning and engagement and acting chief executive.
Council chairman Nicol Horrell thanked her for her dedication, hard work and commitment in steering Environment Southland through the many challenges the organisation faced during her time with the council.
"The council is particularly grateful for Wilma’s astute vision and skill in driving improvements in organisational performance and reporting, and for undertaking a full organisational restructure that means the council is in great shape to deal with the challenges this council will face in the future."
"We will miss Wilma, but fully understand and appreciate her desire to focus on her many other interests and we wish her all the best for her future and a well-deserved retirement." — APL
