South Island sites may be hard to spot

The trailer for Disney's new film featuring some notable South Island landmarks, including Lake Hawea, has been released.

Disney has released the trailer for  $100 million science fantasy film A Wrinkle in Time, part of which was shot at the Hunter Valley Station on the northern shores of Lake Hawea.

Scenes for the film were shot around the the South Island in February this year and also included Mt Cook National Park.

While parts of the South Island appear in the trailer, special effects used to make New Zealand appear like another planet make it hard to recognise where the scenes were shot.

The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling.

All posted numerous photos on their social media profiles for millions of followers when filming in New Zealand of them enjoying the picturesque landscapes of the Queenstown Lakes district.

Standing in for a foreign planet, the New Zealand locations have had special effects added over top.

The film is based on based on a novel of the same name by Madeleine L'Engle and tells the story of a group of children who travel through time and space and different dimensions looking for their father.

It is set for release in March 2018.
