Invercargill city councillor Alex Crackett yesterday announced her bid for the Invercargill mayoralty in next year’s election.

Cr Crackett, a third-term councillor, said she was excited and proud to put herself forward as the city’s next potential mayor.

She said she was the second official candidate in the race as deputy mayor Tom Campbell had already voiced his intentions.

‘‘I decided to announce today my bid to show how I am incredibly commited with our community as I have been for the last nine years.

‘‘I know that I can lead our elected councillors and tackle Invercargill’s biggest challenges.’’

Mayor Nobby Clark is not seeking re-election.

Cr Crackett, 34, was also co-chairwoman of the Local Government New Zealand’s Young Elected Members Network and also served on its national council.

She was still undecided if she would also seek a fourth mandate as a councillor.

Cr Crackett would see how things developed as she was now fully focused on her mayoralty campaign.

‘‘I grew up here. I am raising my family here. I am a ratepayer, just like those I’m hoping will elect me to lead our city into the future.’’
