Region’s Christmas weather looking rather mixed

Christmas is just around the corner, and unfortunately so is a mixed bag of weather for the next week, a meteorologist says.

MetService meteorologist Clare O'Connor said heading into the holiday period people could expect rain, but that would potentially stop on Sunday and make for a drier Monday and Tuesday.

Today was expected to be wet and so was tomorrow, Ms O'Connor said.

"Christmas Eve is looking like a good day."

Christmas Eve had a high of 19C, according to MetService.

"In fact, better weather on Christmas Eve than Christmas Day.

"[Christmas Day is] a bit of a mixed bag _ if there is rain, when will it happen?"

It was still slightly too early to say confidently what would happen, she said, and the weather forecast was likely to change by Christmas Day.

"Potentially, you could see some showers on Christmas Day."

There was no promise it would be "super dry", but it would not be that wet in Dunedin and according to MetService it would be 20C, she said.

"Otago won't be the wettest part of the country."

The outlook indicated a wet Christmas Day for the west of the South Island and potentially the western North Island.
