A 35-year-old Clydevale man is in Dunedin Hospital after being stabbed eight times during an alcohol fuelled brawl in Inch Clutha, near Kaitangata, this morning.
Balclutha Sergeant Martin Bull said the stabbing happened about 12.45am after an argument developed at a Guy Fawkes party.
Police say the attacker, a 29-year-old Kaitangata man, punched at least one female before her partner, the stab victim, intervened.
He was stabbed seven times to the upper torso and once to the face. He is in a stable condition.
Following this, the attacker was hit over the head with a vacuum cleaner pipe, Sgt Bull said.
The attacker's partner tried to stop the fight and received a stab wound to her elbow.
The stabbing victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery this morning. He remained in a stable condition.
The alleged offender and his partner also received treatment at the hospital. He has been placed under guard and will be taken into custody once cleared of his injuries.
He will appear in the Dunedin District Court on Monday charged with causing grievous bodily harm, Sgt Bull said.
Further charges of wounding with intent and male assaults female were likely.
Sgt Bull praised the work of St John and Clutha Health First staff in dealing with "some intoxicated and unruly patients''.
