The rubber met the road in Balclutha last week for Otago Community Trust funding, as local BMX athletes tested the new pump track under construction at Centennial Park.

Infrastructure for youth recreation featured prominently, as the Trust distributed $1,585,875.45 for 2025’s first funding round, including $32,000 to The Clutha Parks Trust to construct a 700sqm asphalt pump track at Centennial Park.

"[It] was a straightforward process and we received a majority of our application," Parks Trust spokesman Jared McPhee said.

"The pump track will cost around $150,000 ... We are hoping to have it open in the next few weeks."

"The local BMX club came to test ride the track before the final surface was placed, which proved to be great as they pointed out any angles that weren’t quite right.

"They thought the track was one of the better tracks around the region," Mr McPhee said.

Construction was going to plan with contractors experienced in building pump tracks.

The funding round had an emphasis on vehicle management and road safety as well as youth.

"By supporting initiatives that enhance youth development and community infrastructure, we aim to create lasting positive impacts throughout the Otago region," Otago Community Trust chairman Andy Kilsby said.
