Spectators from as far as Christchurch gathered at Otago's gold-town Gymkhana Grounds to watch vehicular variety from vintage sportsters and big-block classics to high-performance four-cylinder imports pitch down 400m of public road on Weatherston's straight.
Each of the 35 drivers had five runs to measure pedal control in transferring engine power to the undulating chip seal.
Mr Lucey's fifth and final shot pegged the quickest quarter, a blistering 11.11sec in his 4-litre Audi, just 0.05sec in front of Oamaru's Craig O'Hara in his 4.9-litre Ford T-bucket.
"We've got men and women, parents, grandparents and grandkids up against each other," Lawrence Quarter Mile Club president of 34 years Bill Bazely said.
"It started way back, out of concern for the young fellas ripping it up on their own just out of town, to give them something to do, and now everybody's into it every year, including a few new faces from out of town, and all the proceeds going to the local hospital, volunteer fire brigades and St John's ambulance services who always help us put on a great job of making this a true community event."
The fastest local woman was Nadia Lyders at 12.81sec, and fastest local man was Bailey Kenny at 12.95sec, both in Holden Commodores.
