It is the second time the school will be holding its Brickstone event after a successful inaugural event in 2023.
Bluestone School year 3 and 4 team leader and event organiser Nikki Geddis said this year’s event would be bigger and better.
"The first year exceeded all expectations and we had a chocker school hall all day from 10 till 4, and we had very little space for people to move.
"We decided this year to go to [Timaru] Boys’ High for a bigger hall instead of our own so we could have more exhibitors but also more room for wheelchairs, for pushchairs, and just for people to be able to see, because it was just too squishy at our hall.
"This year we’ve got 20 exhibitors coming, from Christchurch to Dunedin, and we have people who were on the Lego Masters TVNZ show coming and exhibiting but they’re also going to be the guest judges for the children’s Lego competition which the Warehouse have kindly provided prizes for.
"In the boys’ high drama rooms there is going to be a play area, so we’ve got play pits full of Lego for kids and adults to come and play with. Christchurch Toy World are also coming down and will be bringing a big van load of Lego goodies to sell."
She said there would also be raffles, food trucks, and a sausage sizzle run by the home and school committee.
The event serves as fundraiser for the school to help fund resources like Lego for the Makerspace Room and Stem programme, Mrs Geddis said.
"I run the Makerspace room here at school and we have lots of Lego in the room so children can come and make and create.
"It’s all about using their creativity, their problem-solving skills, collaborating and working with others.
"I also run a lunchtime Lego club and we want to build up the Lego robotics in the school and perhaps get some children doing some of the robotics. I need to upskill myself in that area as well."
She said the pupils were very excited for the event.
"I’m not sure if they get more excited then me, though. There’s lots of chatter about it in the playground and when I was on duty at morning tea I had lots of kids running up to tell me about their creations and what they are building and what they’re excited to see."
Brickstone was not just for children, she said.
"Hopefully, there are some excited adults out there as well. It’s for young and old. Last time we had some adults came and they were a bit embarrassed when they first arrived and they said, ‘you know, we haven’t got kids, can we still come?’ and I’m like, ‘of course you can’.
"It’s open to everybody and definitely geared towards families."
The event will run from 10am-4pm and cost $10 for a family of any size, or $5 for adults and $2 for children.
