Ride for charity

Scooter enthusiasts in the South will get the opportunity to test their all-weather mettle for charity next month.

The Southern Scooter Challenge, a trip from Bluff to Queenstown described as an endurance ride "from the sea to mountains in New Zealand's heartland", will take place on September 3 to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

One of the organisers, Alister Rance, said 40 people took part last year, leaving from a "bitterly cold wind and rain-swept" Stirling Point, near Bluff, but arriving to sunshine in Queenstown.

He was hopeful the numbers would double this year.

The event was not a race, but nor was it an easy ride.

"It's a challenge, as well as being an awareness-raiser and fundraiser for prostate cancer - and what better way than sitting on your prostate for 220km on a 50cc scooter?" he said.

The event will be held the day before Father's Day, which seemed "an appropriate day to be doing something to promote men's health".

Scooters have to be capable of doing 50kmh on the open road.

Those interested in the event can register online at www.southernchallenge.co.nzelspeth.mclean@odt.co.nz
