WHS acts dominate rock quest final field

Wakatipu High School acts dominate the field for the upcoming Smokefreerockquest 2010 Central Otago regional final, which will be held in Queenstown for the first time next weekend.

Before Anything Else, Fused, Hertzog, Mystery Diagnosis, Ruby Bain, Shogun, Steeze Monkeys, TalkBack Amp, the Fletchers, Water to Wine and Why We Need Darkness are among the 19 bands competing for a regional final prize of $1150 worth of musical gear from NZ Rockshops.

The People's Choice award winner and two finalists at the regional final will vie with winning acts from 24 other regions for the eight slots available at the national final, in Hamilton, on September 11.

Smokefreerockquest director Glenn Common said the event gave school bands a realistic taste of live performance. Teachers were coming along to support pupils and assess their performance for NCEA more often, he said.

• Smokefreerockquest 2010 Central Otago regional final, Queenstown Memorial Hall, Saturday, July 24, 7pm. Tickets $15 before at Play it Again in Queenstown and Base in Wanaka, or $20 on the door.
