Thorogood no-show due to family issues

George Thorogood and his band have pulled the pin on January's Gibbston Valley Winery summer concert near Queenstown, disappointing the American rocker's fans.

The promoters of the Summer Concert Tour, which also takes in concert venues at Taupo and Whitianga, explained that Thorogood cancelled because of a family illness.

Greenstone Entertainment chief executive Amanda Calvert said The Orchestra, featuring former members of Electric Light Orchestra, would now join headline act Alanis Morissette and former Men at Work frontman Colin Hay.

Nashville-based band Fairground Saints had also been added to the line-up for the concerts in Queenstown (January 20), Taupo (January 27) and Whitianga (January 28).

Greenstone sent its best wishes to Thorogood and his family, and ``completely understand that family must come first'', Ms Calvert said.

Commenting on the Otago Daily Times' Facebook page, Shannon Cunningham said Thorogood was the ``main reason I wanted to go'', while Bronwyn Leishman said she was ``almost glad'' she did not get tickets.

``There will be a lot of very disappointed people out there.''

Simon Marsh commented the ``Cromwell Car Show'' now looked a better option.

But Sandra Chapman said the Gibbston concert would still be an ``awesome day out'' with three international bands.

``Pretty good value for money,'' she observed.

Unless I'm mistaken The Orchestra features one previous member of ELO and some members of other ELO spinoffs, none of course being Jeff Lynne. Having seen George twice I can say this has definitely lowered the ticket value.
