Expect to see many more bikers than usual on Whakatipu roads and trails next month as part of the nationwide Aotearoa Bike Challenge (ABC).

Responding to the app-based challenge last February to get more people cycling recreationally, and to and from work, Queenstown-Lakes bikers cycled some 140,000km and collectively made 11,000 trips, more than 5000 of which were commuter trips — 99 workplaces registered.

Amanda Robinson, co-founder of active travel advocacy group The Lightfoot Initiative, which is promoting ABC alongside the council, says their aim’s to go "bigger and better".

"We’ve got more workplaces, more individuals, and we really want to see the mountain biking community, particularly, with their recreational riding.

And for biking commutes, Robinson suggests Wednesdays, as, like last year, there’ll be free mid-week coffee and kai, 7 till 9am, throughout February — at Frankton Marina (The Boat Shed Bakery), Glenda Dr (Johnny Crema) and at Gorge Rd/Matakauri Park (Sweet Coffee).

There’ll also be pop-up pitstops around the Whakatipu Mondays and Fridays from 4.30pm at the likes of the old Kawarau Falls and Shotover bridges — see The Lightfoot Initiative’s Facebook page for locations.

There’ll also be free bike repairs every Saturday at OneBikeHub opposite Frankton’s Remarkables Market.

From February 10 till 14, there’ll also be free bike safety checks, aimed at kids, at the Events Centre from 3pm till 5pm.

Then, along with Forward Whakatipu, on February 16 there’s a group mountain bike ride from the top of Skyline to Altitude Brewing, with a free brew for those showing their ABC app.

And council’s funding an Arthurs Point ‘bike bus’ which will run every Wednesday morning, from February 12 till the end of June, along the newly-upgraded Sutherland Track from Arthurs Point to Queenstown Primary and St Joseph’s School.
