Over 8000 partygoers expected to flood resort for festival

Frankton will be party central today, as more than 8000 partygoers are expected to descend on the Queenstown suburb for the newest chapter of the Bay Dreams music festival.

Starting at noon, this year’s event marks the first time the festival will be held at the Queenstown Events Centre, following a change in venue from Nelson.

Event director Toby Burrows said he was excited to bring the event to Queenstown following an "epic" show in Tauranga on Wednesday.

"Prep’s gone really good. We’re loving the new venue and location, and it’s been really well received."

He said the crowd could look forward to a "high energy and world-class event" that would feature United States rappers Quavo and NLE Choppa, Australian DJ Luude and British drum and bass duo Sigma.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council said event organisers were encouraging attendees to leave their cars at home and instead buy return bus tickets from the Bay Dreams website.

There would be 30 event buses departing from Wānaka, Cromwell, Arrowtown, Lake Hayes Estate and the Queenstown Recreation Grounds. Parking would be available near the event, accessed via Grant Rd.

Held in early January each year, Bay Dreams began in Mount Maunganui in 2016. The festival’s success saw it debut a South Island event in 2019.

The festival finishes at 10.30pm today.
