Tom Nally delivered trainer Hamish Hunter the best possible leaving present at Wyndham yesterday.

It was Hunter who was rapt after Better Be Watching produced a career best performance to score.

After more than six years working together the pair will part ways, with Nally heading to Western Australia to further his career.

On returning to the winner’s circle with Better Be Watching, Nally saw everything he needed to see before even speaking to Hunter.

‘‘When I saw Hamish he had a big smile on his face and that was great to see,’’ Nally said.

‘‘He was really happy with the win and it was a big thrill that we were able to get it with this mare.

‘‘I have been with Hamish for six and a-half years and he has been awesome to learn off.

‘‘Everyone knows he has been around for more than 50 years and he is a great trainer.

‘‘I have learnt so much off him, not just driving but how to handle horses and breaking in, to all the building up towards the races.

‘‘His horses go to the races full of spirit and they want to compete.

‘‘The last nine months we haven’t had the best run, but it is great to get this win.’’

Nally will step straight into a job with leading Perth trainers Greg and Skye Bond once he leaves Hunter’s barn at the end of this month.

‘‘I am really looking forward to it. My partner is a nurse and we are both heading over there looking for more opportunities and to earn more money.

‘‘The stable looks incredible. I will have a pretty good concession when I am over there, so I am hoping I can pick up a few drives.’’

Better Be Watching had taken on handy fields and produced strong efforts in her recent outings without receiving much luck.

But as well as she had been going, she went to another level in her gutsy Wyndham win.

Despite sitting parked throughout, the mare powered away from her rivals to score.

‘‘She has been going good races without much going our way,’’ Nally said.

‘‘It didn’t go our way today either, but she was too good.

‘‘She was exceptional in my point of view and it was penalty free, so hopefully she will be a good chance again next week.’’

Better Be Watching is bred and raced by a great supporter of both Hunter and Nally in Graham Cooney.
