Local youngster Joe Simpson managed a sprint finish at yesterday’s More FM Kids Duathlon.

The 7-year-old from Arrowtown was one of 112 children taking part in the running and cycle race at Lake Hayes Showgrounds.

After some prompting from the team of supporters who cheered him on during the race, he told the Otago Daily Times he was proud of his efforts and that running was his favourite part of  the event.

"It was good fun but hard."

Joe was competing in the age 7 to 8 category, running 1km along the Lake Hayes track and cycling a 1km loop course.

Remarkables Primary School pupil Briar Dennison competed in the same race. She said it was a brilliant day.

"I like that I had the challenge of biking quite a long way."

Other races included age 6 and under, where parents joined those taking part for a 500m run and 500m bike ride, and the 11-plus section, in which competitors completed a 2km run and 3km bike ride. More FM breakfast host Adam Funnell, known as "AJ" on air, said it was a cracker of a day.

"It has been great fun and the kids have done a brilliant job."
