Toby Gallie, 16, experiencing matchplay for the first time, was up against the more fancied Noah Novacek, 17, in the 36-hole final.
"They played some insane golf," club pro Keeley Johnson says.
"I think something like six holes on the back nine were halved with birdies, which is unbelievable."
He says Toby "showed maturity beyond his years".
He adds the pair had to play a lot of good golf against seasoned players to make the final — Toby had to roll an eight-footer for eagle to win his semifinal.
Toby’s dad Ben Gallie, club pro at nearby Millbrook, echoes Johnson’s thoughts on the final — "it was just blow for blow, just absolute quality golf, it was awesome to watch".
Meanwhile, 8-year-old Archie Harrison, a Futures Whakatipu junior golf club member, recently scored his first hole-in-one.
He aced the 120m seventh hole at the Frankton course and saw his ball drop in.
"I couldn’t quite believe it," he says.
"Dad videoed as we walked towards the green and then we both went crazy when we realised it had actually gone in."
